Mixing hair dye with conditioner Reddit

I know people who mix conditioner and semi permanent dye to dilute their color to make it lighter, which is what I’m hoping to do. Specifically I wanna dilute Pravana Violet but my cousin (who’s in cosmetology) said mixing semi permanent dye with conditioner blocks the cuticle.

Does anyone know if this is true? I’ve heard not to use conditioner with silicone because it’ll seal the cuticle and won’t allow the dye to penetrate well, but I’ve seen people use silicone free conditioner many, many times and their hair has turned out beautiful and lasted a long time.

Hi, I just dyed my hair using Arctic Fox Purple Rain and after googling this, most of the results were for hair masks using deep conditioner, which I'm guessing you're not really supposed to use regularly but just when you need a touch up.

Is that the best option? Or can I just mix some of the dye with my regular conditioner and use that every time I wash my hair? Would that be a good idea? And if so, how much dye should I be adding?

Thank you and have a nice day!

What would you want it to do...??? Just wash normally and if it fades out in a while, do the mask thing then

Is your dye a semi permanent? If it is then mixing it with your conditioner and using it as a mask will keep your colour looking freshly dyed if it’s started fading a bit. You only need to do it once it starts fading, not every wash though. Im sure you know but just in case - this only works on semi permanent dye, not any dye that uses a developer.

tysmmm yea its semi perminant dye

At most I use a 50/50 mixture depending on how pigmented the dye is. Enough to keep my hair the shade I want it but not enough to consistently stain my hands whenever I wash my hair. I’ll shampoo, condition with my dye mix, leave it in while I do the rest of my routine, then rise.

I have a box of garnier olia 110 superlight natural blonde permanent hair colour, I thought about mixing it with conditioner to stretch it out and hopefully have a milder bleaching effect.

My hair currently has about 1/3 dark blonde and 2/3 bleached hait with a horrible tinge of blue : hair . I last used a medium shade blonde box colour 6 weeks ago, it had no effect on the parts of my hair that were already bleached and very very slightly lifted my natural colour, which is an ashy/dark blonde. I still have leftover blue in my hair from months ago which refuses to leave, i wanted to lighten the darker parts of my hair and hopefully get rid of some of this blue.

I dont know much about how developer works and i dont normally do it myself, my hair is pretty thin and i dont want to completely burn it off. Can I mix the developer cream/colourant with some conditioner so the bleach isnt as strong? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

This is a lot more complicated than you would think.

First off, if you have any artificial hair color already on your hair, a lighter color will not do anything. Hair color is a lot more gentle than bleach, so it won't break through artificial hair dye to lighten it.

Sometimes when you dilute hair color, it inhibits it from depositing a nice tone and you may be left with more of an unwanted warmer tone.

There are factors that need to be considered, just be sure to talk to a professional in great detail before you waste your time.

Hi there. Currently my hair is dyed with Loreal Hicolor Hilights in a mix of magenta and red. To refresh the color I use Ion Brights semi permanent in red mixed with conditioner. It works great. However, I am ready to go back to my normal copper color. I have never done a color refresh on my copper hair in the past but since it worked so well with the red, I was hoping to try it. The problem is that I can't find a straight up semi like I did with the Ion red. Can I use a copper that is marketed as permanent or demi but not use with developer? If I just mix the color with conditioner, would it work?

What happens if you mix conditioner in hair dye?

What is this? The first thing you should know is that mixing dye with conditioner only works with semi-permanent hair dye. Not only will conditioner interfere with the developer needed for permanent dye, but adding it to your dye mix will lead to your color applying unevenly.

Can I mix hair dye with conditioner instead of developer?

We don't recommend using conditioner as developer when you mix hair dye. One of the most critical steps to coloring your hair with permanent dye is to mix the dye with a developer.

Can I add arctic fox to my conditioner?

No worries - just a drop or two of Arctic Fox Hair Color added to a handful of silicone-free sulfate-free conditioner will work just as well!
