As assistants to the co-CEOs of a publishing company, Lucy Hutton and Joshua Templeman sit across from each other every day - and they hate each other. Not dislike. Not begrudgingly tolerate. H-A-T-E. Trapped in a shared office 5 days a week, they've become entrenched in an addictive, ridiculous never-ending game of one-upmanship. Slowly realising how fine a line there is between love and hate.

I loved this movie. Yes, I read the book when it came out and LOVED it and I'd like to read it again after having seen the film. I know some people will probably not like the movie as much and pick it apart for what was different (I'm looking at my sibling), but I'm not one of them.

I'll admit I was worried when the movie was announced because Hollywood doesn't always have the best track record when it comes to movies based on books. I thought Lucy Hale's casting was terrific and Robbie Amell could be great as Josh so I wasn't thrilled when I found out he had to drop out, especially since I didn't know who Austin Stowell was. Well, turns out I think he was actually an even better choice. Yes, there's the face and the body (thanks for the hotel scene! 😬), but he played Josh perfectly, from his snotty one-liners to his stoic attitude and unwillingness to just be used for sex (pretty sure this only happens in books and movies!).

I don't remember the book enough to comment on the secondary characters, though said sibling was offended that Lucy's boss was different than described, who knows, maybe after I re-read it I'll have a few "Wth?!" moments, but I didn't have any issues with the other characters. The interactions between the opposing publishers' employees were hilarious, the poor put-upon HR woman was funny and Josh's family was great (except his jerk of a father, though the actor did a good job) and the drama around their history was portrayed well.

I think enough of the scenes and lines from the book were retained for the movie and overall, again, from what I remember, it's pretty faithful to the book. I don't actually remember if the donut scene was in the book, but I cracked up when I watched it. Again, poor HR lady.

Definitely a cute, funny rom-com with a terrific cast that I'd recommend if you're looking for something light but with some tension and a good deal of sarcasm and laughs.
