Donald Trump is a man who fits such a description and as he attempts to guide the U.S.A through the coronavirus pandemic, WWE’s biggest event WrestleMania, takes place over a two-day period this weekend.

Eyebrows have certainly been raised at WWE’s decision to stage it, but chairman Vince McMahon says the show must go on.

Trump knows a thing or two about WrestleMania.

In 1988, McMahon used Trump Plaza in Atlantic City for WrestleMania IV, headlined by Randy Savage and Ted DiBiase for the vacant WWF Championship.

That event was considered such a success that Trump himself requested he host WrestleMania V in the same venue the following year.

While the Historic Atlantic City Convention Hall could hold just shy of 19,000 and WrestleMania has graduated to stadiums holding anywhere between 70,000-100,000 fans, it is still the only venue that has held the event back-to-back.

During one event in 2004, Trump even gave a ringside interview to Jesse the Body Ventura, who was Governor of Minnesota at the time and looking for Trump to endorse his campaign to be president!

Then, WWE’s relationship with the President became a little more public and it became part of their TV programme in 2007.

Trump was hosting America’s version of The Apprentice. At the time, his ratings had begun to fall and Rosie O’Donnell, host of The View, was experiencing the same issue.

Vince McMahon and Donald Trump have been friends for decades

Following a spat over Trump endorsing Miss USA Tara Conner after drink and drug issues, WWE announced the pair would ‘meet’ on RAW.

It was all a joke, as WWE had neither Trump or O’Donnell and proceeded to stage a match with unsigned talent impersonating them.

Yes, it was as disastrous as it sounds.

Following that debacle, McMahon said Trump sent him a letter resenting the segment (it was only storyline, but he probably wasn’t the only one) and the now-president said McMahon was out of touch with WWE fans.

McMahon then challenged Trump to a match at WrestleMania 23 in 2007 billed as ‘the battle of the billionaires’. Neither man was really going to wrestle, so they handpicked one superstar to represent them.

McMahon chose Umaga (Roman Reigns’ late brother) and Trump chose Bobby Lashley.

Trump actually revealed Lashley as his representative a week earlier than he was meant to on a Don Imus’ radio show, but couldn’t remember his name. He ended up settling with ‘a black gentleman who happens to be the strongest man I have ever seen.’

Lashley was full of praise for how Trump conducted himself during the whole angle.
“He actually came into the position and was like, ‘look man I want to make this as great as possible, so tell me what I can do’.

“He didn’t tell me how to do my match, he didn’t tell Vince how to run WWE, he just came in and said, ‘this is awesome, tell me what I could do on my part to make this the best ever,’ and he did his part.”

As the weeks wore on, the story got more and more interesting. They decided the loser of the match would have to have his hair shaved off and Stone Cold Steve Austin was instated as the special guest referee.

Hulk Hogan was originally meant to be in Steve Austin’s spot, but he wanted to be the highest paid performer on the entire card

The match got plenty of mainstream attention, especially the prospect of Trump losing his trademark hair. But, it would be McMahon who felt the wrath of the clippers as Trump and Lashley came out on top.

After the match, though, Trump took a Stone Cold Stunner to the surprise of everyone.

Austin explained on his podcast: “So all of a sudden Vince comes to me and straight up this is the way it happened.

“We’re in the back area. 90,000 people out there Ford Field and he goes ‘Steve come over here. I’m gonna see if I can get Trump take a stunner’. I said, ‘Aw bull shit’. I said, ‘ You think he will?’ He goes, ‘I know Donald he’ll he’ll do it.’

“So he says ‘Donald, Come over here’ and he goes, ‘Steve this is Donald Trump.’ ‘Hey, Mr. Trump. How are you doing?’ And I met him. He goes ‘Listen I was thinking about after everything is all said and done. Steve would hit you with his finished move.’ ‘Well what is it?’ ‘Well it’s called a stunner and it kind of goes like this.

“And Donald Trump’s right hand guy all of a sudden goes, ‘Oh no no no no you don’t need to do that there’s a million reasons why you shouldn’t do that. And here’s why.’ But Donald asked Vince ‘You think it’ll help the show?’ He goes ‘Oh Donald they’ll go crazy.’ So Donald Trump was was man enough to go out there and, we botched it.

“It was the slickest stunner that I ever delivered but I give him credit. Whatever anyone’s opinion is that he did was cool enough and in a Showtime event like that event to go out there and be a part of the show and make people happy. I dug it,” Austin said.

In 2009, McMahon and Trump were at it again when Trump purchased Monday Night Raw and immediately announced that next week’s show would air commercial-free and that every WWE fan that who purchased a ticket would be given a full refund.

Only one week later the angle was dead and McMahon bought the company back for twice the price. In reality, WWE’s stock dropped massively because of the news (somehow) and WWE had to quickly rectify the situation.
