I've tried equipping it to my quickbar, pouches, one hand, two hand, and different weapons. Still can't use it, the item is grayed out. I must be missing something here.

Not all weapons can have an enchant on them.

Just figured this out after playing 90% of the game. Personally, I find it unfair. If the boss can easy 2-hit me, I should be able to put grease on my +10 unique so maybe one slice can do 1/5 of his health.

This. Named "unique" weapons, and any weapon that's already had its damage type modified (bleed, magic, holy etc) with AoW's cannot be buffed with grease, or spells.

From what I heard, weapons can have two specific damage types or modifiers. Bloodhounds Fang only has bleed, so Im able to enchant or grease. But the Dragon Halberd, that says it has ice and lightning, cannot have anything added to it. I believe this includes when you add an ash to modify it as well to something other than standard

Baticus-prime is right. I switched the affinity on my uchitkatana from blood to standard. Now I can use fire grease

No, just unique weapons, same as in Dark Souls 3. Bh fang is an exception to the rule.

Boss weapons, magical weapons and anything unique can not use grease, they have to be able to have a ash of war slot available to use grease

Not sure this is true - Bloodhound's Fang drops from a boss, is unique and you can apply weapon grease

I made my epee sacred with golden vow and couldnt use grease anymore, so that counts too for normal weapons which you enchant with an affinity

Fire grease (fire) counts as an affinity. Can’t have more than 2 affinities per weapon

So if I have an Ashes(regardles of element) equipped to my Katana I can't use any grease?

Yeah I just sell all the grease for runes.

If your weapon has no other elemental damage component you can use the item to give it a temporary extra magic damage.

Just put it in your item quick select (like your flask for example) and use it from there.

Grease for a number of boni can be pretty easily crafted. You just need to find the recipes from cookbooks.

The recipe for blood grease, for example, can be found in fort haight in limgrave, alongside the needed blood roses.

I personally haven’t seen greases used in PVP, haven’t even used greases myself in PVE. not to say they aren’t useful, but they do become more plentiful as you find more and more as well as unlocking the ability to make them on the fly. Plenty of opportunities to test wether or not they’re worth the time, I think!

could be wrong but… I believe when you use an ash of war with any affinity besides the main three (Quality, Keen, Heavy) it will lock greases out from being usable.

It depends on the weapon and the ash. As a general rule of thumb, if it takes somber stones to upgrade then you probably can't grease it. If it takes regular smithing stones and you only give it physical scaling (standard, heavy, keen, quality) you can generally grease it.

These rules aren't 100% though. What weapon/infusion are you trying?
