Current Models for Quarterly Security Updates
Current Models for Biannual Security Updates
Samsung confirmed plans to keep select Galaxy phones and tablets updated with security patches for four years. A more recent announcement states that the company plans to keep some models updated for five years. The company says by “extending support for security updates delivered on a monthly or quarterly basis, Samsung is giving users peace of mind knowing their data is protected for as long as they use their Galaxy device.” So while some devices won’t get upgraded to Android 12, they’ll still get regular, and in some cases irregular, security updates in 2023 and beyond. Of course, Samsung says that availability of “security updates may vary by device and market” and that its lists of security update models are subject to change and will be reviewed on a periodic basis. Samsung Galaxy Android 12: What’s NewSamsung’s version of Android 12 looks different than the version Google’s released for Pixel devices because it utilizes the company’s One UI. The company’s One UI upgrades typically deliver design changes, enhancements to older features, and features for newer and older devices alike. Here’s the full Android 12/One UI 4 change log:
These Galaxy Devices Will Get Android 12Samsung used to keep Galaxy phones and tablets updated with major Android software updates for two years. Fortunately, the company has come to its senses and changed that policy. The company says it’s now committed to providing three to four years of major software upgrades going forward. This is obviously a huge development as it means Galaxy owners can hold onto their devices for a lot longer. Initially, it looked like this change would only apply to higher profile devices, but according to Samsung, lengthier support will be extended to other devices as well. Here’s the full list:
If your device is on this list, and you haven’t received an update yet, you should get Android 12/One UI 4 in 2023. If it isn’t, you may find yourself (officially) stuck on Android 11. If Samsung hasn’t confirmed Android 11 for your phone or tablet, you won’t get upgraded to Android 12. That means devices like the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy Note 9 will get left behind. You can expect the iPhone 15 models to feature an improved processor which could lead to better battery life and app performance. The higher-end iPhone 15 models should feature Apple's new A17 chip though we could see the lower-end come with Apple's A16, the same processor that powers the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. Rumors suggest the new processor will be based on TSMC's next-gen 3nm chip technology. The process is expected to enhance performance while also reducing power consumption. In other words, we should see faster phones with better battery life. Apple may wind up being one of the only major companies to use 3nm chip technology in 2023. According to Digitimes, MediaTek and Qualcomm are both seen as unlikely to launch 3nm-based chips this year. According to Bloomberg, Apple's next processor may focus on battery life rather than processing power. Qualcomm's announced a new 5G Snapdragon X70 modem. It didn't make it into the iPhone 14 series but there's a good chance it lands inside all four iPhone 15 models next year. Apple's reportedly working on its own modem but we won't see it until 2024 or 2025. TrendForce thinks Apple's in-house modem will debut in 2024 while analyst Jeff Pu believes Apple will stick with Qualcomm and its unannounced Snapdragon X75 in 2024. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman says Apple will indeed be sticking with Qualcomm chips in 2023. So does Digitimes. Leaker Majin Bu says the iPhone 15 Ultra will start at 256GB of storage while the iPhone 15 Pro will start with 128GB. Taiwanese research firm TrendForce predicts Apple will put an increased 8GB of RAM into the upcoming iPhone 15 Pro models. The standard iPhone 15 models may still carry 6GB of RAM. Analyst Jeff Pu also believes the iPhone 15 Pro models will have 8GB of RAM on board. It's still early, but you can expect additional iPhone 15 rumors to outline some of the other potential performance enhancements in the coming months. > 1 / 10 Related Topics:AndroidAndroid 12Android 12 betaAndroid 12 releaseAndroid 12 release dateAndroid 12 updateFeaturedGalaxy Android 12GoogleSamsungSamsung Android 12Samsung Android 12 betaSamsung Android 12 featuresSamsung Android 12 release dateSamsung Android 12 updateSamsung Galaxy Android 12Samsung Galaxy Android 12 updateSoftwareTechnology Can I get Android 12 on my Samsung?Samsung will further update the entire Galaxy S20 and Galaxy S10 lineups to Android 12 in the first couple of months of 2022.
